Media In Recession: Broadcast Stumbles, Cable Capitalizes On Interactive Platforms

The digital media industry is not too young to have cycles already.  In the mid to late nineties, there were wonderful innovations that can be read these days like the Burgess Shale

Innovations such as forums, MSN chat, social media and online games all originated in peer-to-peer links, BBS’s and early MMORPGs.

Economically, we can probably chart current trends, cycles and behaviours based on the advertising and other revenues that ebbed and flowed throughout downturns experienced by other media.

This article in Mediapost has a simple analysis of the revenues flowing between offline media since the 1950s.  We now live in a world of exponentially fragmenting media which will challenge the production of future versions of this chart, but as a snapshot history lesson there are salient points which can be drawn out.
